    Description

This Chumash mortar and pestle, was found in the Santa Monica Canyon area, of Southern California. It measures as follows:
    Mortar
    -
    Length: 4” and
    Width: 3 ¼”
    Bowl Depression: 1 ¼” -
    Height: 2”
Weight or mortar: 1 lb 8.6 oz
    Pestle
    -
    Length: 2 ½” and
    Width: 1 ½”
    Weight: 6.4 oz
The initial owner said this came from an eroded sand-cliff at the opening of Santa Monica Canyon, where Rustic Creek flows into the Pacific Ocean. Uncovered in the late 1800s.
The mortar is a deeply recessed, hand-sized stone. Extraction marks, dings, nicks and abrasion scratches are evident throughout. There is also much evidence of fire associated with this artifact. Dark marks on the stone face suggest fire of some type.
The pestle in this case is a hefty, dense beach stone that clearly has seen use.
This small mortar and pebble pestle have all the characteristics of a Chumash artifact.
    Dings, chinks, fire marks.
