These guys are not related to the “ramshorns” commonly referred to as “pest snails”. Like mystery snails, they are part of the Apple snail family. Also like mystery snails, they are NOT hermaphrodite and they do require male and female mating in order to reproduce. They get bigger than the typical mystery snail but not as big as channel or island Apple snails. They get to be about 2 1/2- 3”. Unlike mystery snails, they lay their eggs under the water in clear jelly looking eggs sacs on various surfaces (my momma likes the bottom of the heater most). They are one of the few apples that lay their eggs under water instead of above. They also LOVE live plants, and not in a beneficial way. They do not distinguish between dead or live plant matter and will eat all of it equally. For that reason, if you value your plants, they do best in a non-planted aquarium. It is also said that they can eat other smaller species of snails since they are omnivorous…. Unlike assassin snails, it’s not their first choice of protein. If they are fed a well balanced diet they don’t eat other snails. They would have to be pretty hungry. I have had a few bladder snails in the tank with hundreds of the babies/ and bigger Colombians and they haven’t even shown an interest. They are going to go for the easiest food sources first, which in my case is their snello, veggies, shrimp pellets and random other sampling’s of fish foods. Out of all of my snails, the Colombians have the coolest looking body and faces! They have extremely long antennas and alien like faces. Their bodies are purple with yellow spots.
As with all of my snails. Proceeds from snails goes towards funding Jamie’s aquatic world. A registered nonprofit aquatic rescue center. The ones that are available are about dime sized currently and grow quickly.
