The options are for Radio Flyer Wagon Axle Adapters and Wheel Hubs that will let you simply and quickly mount your set of go kart tires and wheels to your Radio Flyer wagon. The options are described below. It is pictured for reference only.
Equipment Description:
Radio Flyer Wagon Axle Adapters:
This is an item we manufacture. It is a one piece adapter that is machined out of steel bar stock. It is intended to adapt go kart wheel hubs and then a wheel and tire set to your Radio Flyer Wagon. The adapter has a .502" diameter hole drilled in it. This slides over the existing wagon axle (most Radio Flyers we have met have 1/2" O.D. axle shafts). The other end of the adapter is turned to 5/8" O.D. and it has a 5/8" thread on the end. This is where the wheel hub installs. A flex lock nut is provided to secure the wheel hub in place. Set screws are also included to tighten the adapter to the wagon axle. Set screws are 120 degrees apart and are 1/4" in size.
Wheel Hubs:
We offer two different types of wheel hubs. Both are made of aluminum and include the needed wheel studs and lug nuts to fasten on your go kart wheels and tires. One of the options offers four (4) American pattern wheel hubs. Another offers four (4) metric pattern wheel hubs that have inch size bearings. The bearings on both the American pattern and metric pattern hubs are both 5/8" I.D. Two other options are offered for either two American pattern or two metric pattern wheel hubs with the above described axle adapters.
Wheel Pattern Descriptions:
American pattern hubs and wheels have a three bolt pattern on a 2.5" circle. The hole in the center of your wheels will have a 1.75" size if it is American pattern. Another check to see if you have an American pattern wheel or wheel hub is to measure between neighboring stud holes. You will get approximately 2.125" c/l to c/l on an American wheel.
American wheels or hubs are drilled for 1/4" studs and nuts. Most American pattern hubs also have a set of 5/16" tapped holes for bigger studs and nuts. We do not provide the 5/16" hardware, and if you use this size you'll need to drill out your wheels to fit.
A metric wheel will have a 1.5" center hole (40 mm to be exact) and a smaller spacing on the studs. The c/l measurement on neighboring stud holes will be closer to 1 15/16" on the metric wheel or hub. The metric wheels and hubs also have a three bolt pattern that is on a 58 mm circle.
The metric hubs and wheels will be drilled for 8 mm studs and nuts.
Cost Differences:
Why do the metric pattern hubs cost so much? They are made to order in very small batches because they are an odd ball in the go karting world. The American pattern hubs are being made 24/7/365 on a CNC machine as you read this. That makes for a sweet spot on pricing. We find many customers who have purchased metric pattern wheels unknowingly on E-Bay. Luckily there is the expensive odd ball hub with metric bolt pattern and inch size bearings available so you can use your wheels. Without this option all you have is sunk cost.
As we noted above, most Radio Flyer Wagons we've met have 1/2" diameter axles. We have heard of some Chinese wagons that have 7/16" axles so check your dimension before ordering. We have had customers with these smaller axles who have successfully used our adapters. But you'll need to be okay with the fact that the set screws are going to fasten the adapters down a bit off center, or on a bit of an eccentric. We don't know if this makes for a noticeable run out in the tire and wheel as they rotate. We have also had some customers with 5/8" axles on their wagons. We have drilled out the adapters for them. Let us know if you need that bit of help.
We also always have auctions on E-Bay for the go kart tire and wheel package you'll need to sex up your Radio Flyer wagon. Again just look for our E-Bay store gokartracingdotcom or our user name oak878. Or check out our cross promoted items for the set of wheels and tires you need for your new wheeled creation.
