    Description

    ENGRAVED GORGET
    JEFFERSON COUNTY KENTUCKY
    HEAVILY PATINATED RED SLATE
3 inches long;  approx 1/4 inches thick; 1 13/4 inches wide
This finely made engravied gorget is from a locally found found  Jefferson County collection. It is made of  what appears to be heavily patinated red slate, which is not common, but shows up a lot in artifacts from the Louisville area,  and has good mineralization and surface iron depostion. It  is unusual in that it appears to have slight elongated tabs at each end, which is a form I have not seen before. It has  nicely spaced biconically drilled perforations and is on the thin side for a gorget.  It is slightly concave on the back and slightly convex on the front. It has very fine engraving on each side of the front face.  One side has a series of straight lines that changes to diagonal lines.   The other side has a type of engraving sometimes referred to as a "stairway to heaven" motif which is a series of interconnected crosshatched boxes. I have seen this motif on hopewell gorgets before. Is a really interesting "no brainer" gorget from an area that doesnt produce many slate artifacts. Guaranteed authentic with a 30 day return policy.
