Description

The display tubes are becoming scarce worldwide so this is probably the final run of these full kits.
The printed Gizmo label that you can attach to a plastic or styrene board looks OK, but I really wanted an actual circuit board for my Gizmo build. A real PCB that looks like an older board and would have all of the holes drilled and plated would make mounting parts much easier.
I tried for many months to find some printed circuit board manufacturer that will make a PCB that could resemble the ones made in the 80's and have found that the brown circuit board material is hardly ever used. If I use the normal board build process the board ends up bright green and does not have that authentic retro appearance.  But I have finally found one manufacturer that can make a brown board and also real gold plated contacts and it looks fantastic!
Here is a photo of one of the kits being offered after it is nearly completely assembled:
Here is a picture of the Sanyo ICC-808D board next to a 3D rendering of the circuit board I designed. Notice the hole placement is virtually identical, the traces are curved and it has real gold card edge fingers at the bottom (even though the 3-D render does not show them in gold):
The movie prop did not light up, but I wanted it to so added a few additional holes at the top underneath the area where the display tubes will be located. These holes would not be seen or wouldbe covered by parts in the Sanyo board, so will not detract from the authentic looking board. The additional holes will enable adding a small through-hole micro controller part, a power switch an adjustment potentiometer to control the speed and pattern selection of the illumination of the center segment of the display tubes.
The last picture in the photos above is from a previous version of the kit that used LEDs to light up the display tubes, but does show what the completed kit will look like.  The 9V battery is not included, but the metal battery holder and the battery connector are included..  This version of the kit does not use LEDs to light up the display tubes and instead actually lights up the middle segment of each display tube.  It still has one LED to light up the error box on the far right.  See the video below for a better view of what the operational display looks like.
Here is a video of the board in operation (partially finished):

The daughteboard kit contains parts to be able assemble either of the two different styles of daughterboards pictured below.
Also included is the coiled cord, wire and orange wire nut used to connect the gizmo and the daughterboard.
The only parts you will need to provide is a 9V battery and the leather Gizmo holster - I am not very handy with leather...  The daughterboard does come with a metal belt clip to attach it to your utility belt.
This kit comes with all of the parts you need, but does involve a lot of assembly and soldering is highly recommend for most parts and is essential for the illumination circuitry.  Here is a link to a detailed set of build instructions that will help you evaluate what you are getting into and also help you with the build if you decide to purchase:
And no links to instructions?
What is up with that?
