Mystery snails are extremely popular for their stunning colors as well as their practical benefits. They work hard to clean algae off of glass, plants, and decorations, they eat hair algae, and they keep your substrate clean and the correct color. Mystery snails are completely peaceful, and therefore safe to keep with any fish, shrimp, or plants. What differentiates these snails from other types of snails is their unique breathing and breeding techniques. They can breathe both through their gills and through a tube that extends out of the front of their bodies. They extend this tube up above the water line and then move back and forth to take the air in.
Size:
Mystery snails are among the largest freshwater snails in the hobby, growing to a maximum diameter of 3 inches. Some specimens may stay around 1 to 1 ¼ inches in diameter. Most of the Mystery snails I ship out are very young and range from ½ to 1 inch in diameter.
Recommended Water Parameters:
pH range: 7.2 to 8.4
(7.6 is ideal)
Temperature range: 65° to 85° F
(76° F is ideal)
kH 12-18
gH 8-18 (Mystery snails like hard water)
Minimum Tank Size: 1 gallon per adult snail
Recommended Tank Size: 5 gallon per adult snail
Acclimation:
Do Not
drop hot or cold snails from the mailbox directly into your tank water,
drip acclimation is recommended.
To Drip Acclimate your snails, you will need a large container (1 to 2 gallons), airline tubing and a air valve, but the air valve is optional.
Place the soaked paper towel that came with the packaging and your snails into the container.
Set the container at a lower level than your tank.
Place one end of the air tubing inside your tank and the other inside the container.
You?ll want to suck on the other end of the tube until tank water begins to flow through slowly, creating a drip.
You can control how fast the water drips by either tying a knot or using a valve to regulate it.
You?ll want about one or two drops a second going through, and you want a minimum of 75% of the container to filled.
The drip method can take hours to complete, so if you go this route, be prepared to invest time in it.
Although this is the safest method!
You can now carefully introduce your snails into their new home. CAREFULLY! DO NOT yank the snails if they didn't stay put on the paper towel.
If you find these instructions confusing or wonky, you only need to search online Drip Acclimation. There are many videos for a visual demonstration!
The snails may just lay on the bottom of the tank and hide in their shells for 8-48 hours before they start roaming around. Please wait 48 hours for them to adapt to their new home before you start to worry about them. They'll probably be hungry after their shipment!
Food and Diet:
Mystery snails are extremely active eaters, which makes them so excellent at ridding aquariums of waste. They are completely safe to keep with live plants as long as enough food is available for them; however, they have been known to munch on plants if they get hungry enough. Other than algae and biofilm, they also eat fish/invertebrate pellets, algae wafers, and blanched vegetables such as zucchini, kale, spinach, or cucumber. Mystery snails have a very keen sense of smell and will rush toward food as soon as it is dropped in the water.
***Warning! Avoid any food product, medication, or plant fertilizer that contains Copper of any form. Copper is toxic to invertebrates. Many commercial fish foods, medications, and plant fertilizers contain copper or more commonly copper sulfate. Always look at the ingredient list for any product going into the aquarium to ensure they are copper free.***
Snail Reproduction:
Sexing juvenile snails isn't practical. When they mature the females will be huge compared to the males. You can choose if you want your snails to reproduce or not.
Water level should be 2"-3" below top of tank if you want egg clutches
Water level should be completely full if you don't want egg clutches
Egg clutches need to remain moist and above water for 4 weeks. They harden quickly and will be very firm even in moist conditions. You can leave them in-place to hatch, 4 out of 5 clutches will make it if you just leave them alone. You'll probably need a lid that covers 60-70% of the tank opening to keep humidity in and get good hatch rates.
