The last of the German made Volkswagen Beetles.
Americans purchased 10,681 Volkswagen Beetle Convertibles in 1979, followed by an additional 4,572 in 1980. To avoid having to comply with stricter 1980 emission and safety regulations, all the final examples were sold as 1979 Models.
I have owner history, (documents that come with the car), of this well-preserved example, dating back to 4-23-1988. (including mileage verification documents)
The following are recent service invoices for the car:
Clean & pack & replace CV Boots (4)
Replace all injector hoses/fuel lines & O Rings
Replace front brake shoes & wheel cylinders/Replace rear wheel cylinders
Oil Change (20/50)
New Wiper Blades
Install 2 front KYB shocks/Replace 2 front strut mounts
Replace Front Windshield Seal & Chrome (Original West Germany Windshield)
In addition to the above, the convertible boot top is new, as it did not have one when I bought the car. I don’t know of anything, mechanically speaking, that this car needs (if I did, I would have had it done along with the services above).
Everything on the car works, including the clock, except for the odometer (the speedometer does work, just not the odometer). I purchased the car from an elderly gentleman locally on 5-13-21 with 37,457 miles on the odometer. The car had 37,454 when he bought the car on 2-5-21. (the only reason that he sold the car was that he could barely get in and out of the car due to his health). He purchased the car from the previous local owners of 30 years (since 1991). It appears that the odometer has stopped working since he owned the car from 5-13-21. I did some research and the problem is more than likely an internal plastic odometer gear. They are available through a company called Odometer Gears from VA. The current GA title does say actual mileage 037454…
This is a solid car and pretty much a rust free Southern and Georgia car. It runs, drives, and handles great. Its fun to drive and a nice collectible VW.
