Q: Why will a solid sterling silver lobster clasp or spring ring clasp be attracted to a magnet?
A:
In all lobster style clasps and spring ring clasps, there is a tiny spring made of steel to make the clasp open and close. It is not made from sterling silver, because sterling silver cannot work as a spring. That is the reason why your magnet can pick up the clasp.
Please take your magnet to your local jewelry store, and ask them about it. You can use your magnet to try on their clasps too.
Another easy thing to do is to go to your local department store.  They will have some sterling silver chains that are made with a lobster clasp or spring ring clasp. Those items are sometimes displayed outside of the case. You can use your magnet to test them too.
Also, please test any other necklace you already have that is made with a sterling silver lobster clasp or spring ring clasp.
The ONLY positive test to identify if an item is sterling silver or not is to use silver testing acid.
